Anvisa injunction suspends the use of 12 million

The National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) suspended, this Saturday (4), the use of 12 million doses of Coronavac vaccine. In an official letter sent last Friday (3), the Butantan Institute informed Anvisa that the “factory unit” responsible for filling 25 batches, totaling just over 12 million doses sent to Brazil by Sinovac, “has not been inspected and was not approved by Anvisa”. With this, the agency decided to suspend the application of vaccines sent in these batches.

In a press release, the Butantan Institute informed that the precautionary measure “should not cause alarmism”, and highlighted that it was the Institute itself who reported the matter to Anvisa, “out of a commitment to transparency and extreme precaution.”

safe vaccine

Coronavac, a vaccine produced by the Butantan Institute in partnership with the Sinovac laboratory, in China, had its effectiveness once again recognized. This time, for a study carried out in Chile, whose results were presented by a group of researchers in an article, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, this Thursday (2).

The study concluded that the protection of the vaccine against infections is 65.9%, 87.5% to prevent hospitalizations, 90.3% to prevent admissions to Intensive Care Units (ICU) and 86.3% against deaths . The effectiveness measured by the study also applies to the elderly population.

The precautionary measure adopted by Anvisa to suspend the use of these lots in Brazil is not punitive, but rather, are “sanitary measures to avoid exposure to consumption and use of irregular or suspect products,” said the Agency’s statement.
