Despite having lower rates of proliferation compared to figures from other moments of the health crisis, the pandemic in Brazil is currently coexisting with the advance of the Delta variant, which emerged in India.
The proliferation of the strain is the reason why the capital of Rio de Janeiro, for example, postponed, last Thursday (26) and for an indefinite period, the gradual reopening of activities.
:: How do new variants affect vaccination? Scientists answer ::
A study released on Friday (27) by the scientific magazine The Lancet, in the United Kingdom, showed that Delta offers twice as much chance of hospitalization as Alpha, a variant of British origin that has already been identified in several countries in the Americas.
Researchers studied more than 40,000 cases of coronaviruses in England to reach this conclusion.
Experts point out that Delta is almost twice as infectious as the first known covid virus and is also up to 60% more transmissible than Alpha.
