Cuba starts vaccinating pregnant and lactating women with formula

Cuba began vaccinating pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women this Thursday (29), with the Abdala formula. Stage will start with women from 19 years old, between two and three months of pregnancy. In just over a month of vaccination campaign, 9,085 million doses were applied between Abdala and Soberana 02, two of the five formulas in production on the island.

The island continues to cross a boom of the pandemic. In the last 24 hours, 8,607 new cases and 68 deaths were registered by covid-19. On Tuesday (27), the country broke the record since the beginning of the health emergency, with more than 9,000 contaminated. In total, there are 366,985 cases and 2,628 died from the disease, according to the Ministry of Public Health.

In 2021 alone, the number of infected pregnant women and mothers rose to 2,000, while throughout the pandemic, 110 infected women had been registered.

The director of Epidemiology at the Ministry of Public Health, Francisco Durán García said that the moment is very serious and people must resume compliance with sanitary measures.

“Today we can talk about some indicators that have decreased, but there is still a very high transmission. With the increase in cases, the deceased are coming, and what we are facing is really difficult,” said the doctor.

Cuban health authorities indicate that the presence of new variants of the virus would be the main cause of the increase in infections.
