Last Sunday (5), Amazon Day, a cultural event was held in Belém do Pará, which occupied the city’s “foundation” area.
Indigenous and allied artists reclaimed the territory as a Contemporary Art Cabanagem, which led to the struggle, protection of forests, culture and the denunciation of crimes against the forest and humanity. The Ver-o-Peso complex, the Açaí Fair, the Ladeira do Forte and the Forte do Castelo Wall, in the Cidade Velha neighborhood, were taken over by the act.
The artists named the initiative: Amazon Anti-colonial Inspiration Day (DIAA).
The collective formed by artivists and activists has a team from the Digital Apparatus, Ponto de Cultura Alimentar Iacitatá, OCADHANA and Rede RAMA in partnership with 100% Amazônia and Cas’Amazônia.
:: Amazon in destruction: understand and see how the deforestation phases happen ::
Through the projections, acts of destruction of the Amazon forest were denounced. According to data from the Amazon Institute of Man and Environment (Imazon), deforestation in the Amazon has increased by 51% in the last 11 months, considering the interval between August of last year and June of 2021.
The percentage is a comparison with the period from August 2019 to June 2020, when 5,533 km² of devastation were recorded. This time there were 8,381 km² in destroyed area.

The projected arts, illustrations and narratives are by the indigenous Denilson Baniwa, Moara Brasil, the visual artist Kambô, the illustrator Magno and the narratives of Tainá Marajoara and Joanna Denholm.
Visual art collectives from Greenpeace, the Permanent Campaign Against Pesticides and for Life, Projetemos, the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST) and the Popular National Conference on Food Security and Sovereignty also contributed to the construction of the act.
Among the projections was the one against the Temporal Framework with the words: “Timeframe no. It marks the end of the Amazon, it marks the end of the world” #PL490No”, as well as data on genocide against indigenous peoples.
“320 leaders assassinated between 1996 and 2019” and also “Tell me what plants you have, you’ll tell you what you breathe: Suffocated Amazon. Guardian of O2 starts to emit CO2”.
The return of hunger was also the subject of the accusations. The State of Pará is a world leader in carbon emissions, illegal mining, working in conditions analogous to slavery and the murder of rural workers and traditional leaders.

The visual record was made by photographer Rao Godinho, production by Isabela Dias and Carlos Ruffeil and collaboration by Thiara Fernandes in the conception.
During the act, pocketmen tried to stop the projection with intimidation and threats. However, the attempt was contained and the act followed.
Established by Law No. 11,621, on November 19, 2007 by the then President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), the Amazon Day began to be celebrated every September 5th with the aim of reminding the population about the importance of the largest tropical forest of the world.
