In Paraíba, gas cylinders can cost R$ 110.00

The price of the gas cylinder has risen once again. Now it costs R$ 110.00, in the state of Paraíba. This readjustment is the eighth this year alone.

“It’s hard to live in Brazil, everything increases, except our salary”, says Ana de Sousa, a resident of the Mangabeira neighborhood. The increase, according to the LPG Gas Dealers Union, is due to inflation and because of the readjustment in the salary of employees in the categories.

In João Pessoa, it is possible to buy the 13kg cylinder, the one for domestic use, for R$ 105.00, in cash and R$ 110.00, in installments.

“If this continues, we will have to cook with firewood. If you add the price of food and gas, it gives almost all of my salary”, lamented the resident, and rightly so, since, according to the Inter-Union Department of Statistics and Socioeconomic Studies (DIEESE), the price of the basic food basket in João Pessoa, is R$ 495.76, added to the R$ 110.00 reais for gas, it is more than half the value of the minimum wage of a worker.

According to economist Ana Cristina Mélo, the exchange rate policy adopted in the current government, of floating exchange rate, means that it is the supply and demand for foreign currency that determines the exchange rate, and not the State.

“The fact is that when there is total freedom in the exchange rate, the prices of imported and exported products can rise and the government does nothing to regulate this situation. A very recent example that is close to us is the rise in meat prices, which is greatly influenced by the high dollar. The meat producer, when observing the high dollar, will be more interested in producing for export than selling internally (because he will profit more), thus, with little amount of meat available to be consumed internally , their prices will rise.”, he says.

And he adds that the devaluation of the real against the dollar influences the increase in the prices of other products as well, and this situation reduces the purchasing power of Brazilian workers.

“Since their salaries were readjusted by a percentage lower than inflation. And as we see the value of the basic food basket rise more and more, and the government says that prices will adjust naturally, we can’t expect that in the long run everything will change balance while we see millions of Brazilians going hungry,” explains the economist.

Despite this overload in the increase in cylinder prices, Petrobras has already announced that the gas will be readjusted once more, this month, this time because of the rise in the dollar.
