Mass immunization initiative against covid no.

This Thursday (29), mass vaccination against covid-19 began in Complexo da Maré, in the northern part of Rio de Janeiro. It is estimated that the vaccination will cover until Saturday (31) 30,000 residents of the region, aged between 18 and 33 years, who had not yet been immunized, according to the City of Rio.

The initiative is a partnership between the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), Redes da Maré and the City of Rio de Janeiro and aims to analyze the behavior of the disease in an immunized population over time. Vaccination will be done with AstraZeneca.

This is the second mass vaccination research project in the city of Rio. The first was carried out in June in Paquetá, with 1.5 thousand people immunized.

Registration for vaccination took place in advance in the last week. This Thursday, the initiative began with the group aged 25 to 33 years. On Friday (30), it will be the turn of residents from 18 to 24 years old. On Saturday (31), there will be a recap for everyone over 18 years old.

Altogether, there will be 121 vaccination points in the complex: family clinics, municipal health centers, neighborhood associations, schools and Vila Olímpica da Maré. The action should mobilize 500 volunteers.

With about 140,000 residents, Complexo da Maré is the largest group of favelas in Rio. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 317 deaths and almost 6.8 thousand cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in the region, according to data from the city hall. Thus, Maré occupies 13th place in the ranking of neighborhoods with more cases of the disease in the capital.

Vaccination resumed

After interrupting the immunization calendar by age, the City of Rio resumed last Wednesday (28) the vaccination campaign for the general population. Last Tuesday (27), the Municipal Health Department received 291,000 doses of the immunizing agent.

But the municipal secretary of Health, Daniel Soranz, admitted that the calendar is at risk of being interrupted again if the Ministry of Health does not provide more vaccines in the coming days. In an interview with CNN, Soranz said that the vaccines could run out in the coming days, leading the city to stop the campaign next Saturday (31).
