North Korea retests long-range missile

North Korea confirmed long-range missile testing last weekend. According to Pyongyang, the tests were a “strategic weapon of great importance” and were successfully completed.

The episode takes place in a context of heightened tension on the Korean peninsula. North Korea says the weapons are a way to “deter” South Korea, “contain” Seoul and protect itself from what it considers to be growing military threats from hostile forces, especially after the military exercises between South Korea and the U.S.

In Southeast Asia, typhoon “Conson”, also known as “Jolina”, caused at least 17 deaths in the Philippines. The central region of Vietnam, as well as other countries in the region, were also affected.
