Winner of the auction that privatized national parks in RS and

Scheduled to start last Wednesday (1), the collection of tickets to the national parks of Aparados da Serra and Serra Geral, located in Rio Grande do Sul, was postponed by the company that won the auction to grant visitation services. Urbia Cânions Verdes, managed by Construcap, made the announcement on August 27 and did not provide a new date to start charging.

According to Urbia Cânions Verdes, the visit to the canyons of Itaimbezinho and Fortaleza and to the Rio do Boi trail will cost R$35 for one day of visitation and R$55 for two, in the first three months. After that, the amounts will be readjusted to R$50 and R$80, respectively.

Located in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, the national parks of Aparados da Serra and Serra Geral were managed by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), an agency linked to the Ministry of the Environment. The main entrance to the parks is through the city of Cambará do Sul, located 200 km away from Porto Alegre. Together, the parks cover an area of approximately 30,400 hectares.

The auction of parks was held on January 11 by the Ministry of the Environment, as part of a package of dozens of concessions in conservation units provided for under the Presidency of the Republic’s Investment Partnership Program (PPI). It foresees investments estimated at R$260 million over 30 years.

Among the improvements that the company must make are the implementation and management of parking lots; the construction of the Portal dos Parques, which will act as the main entrance to visitors; installation of information and control posts and visitation support centers with toilets; implementation of an Internal Transport Service in the parks, in order to organize the movement of visitors to access units and attractions; implementation of hosting and camping infrastructure and services; and the opening, management and signaling of trails and viewpoints.

More parks will be awarded

On August 25, the federal government decided to include five more national parks in the PPI asset portfolio. The conservation units included are the national parks of Serra da Canastra (MG), Serra do Cipó (MG), Caparaó (MG/ES), Restinga de Jurubatiba (RJ) and the Ipanema National Forest (SP). Altogether, the parks add up to more than 280,000 hectares of protected areas in three distinct biomes: Cerrado, Atlantic Forest and the coastal marine biome.

In addition to the national parks of Aparados da Serra and Serra Geral, auctions have already taken place for the national forests of Canela and São Francisco de Paula (RS). The concession of the two forests in Rio Grande do Sul is questioned by the Federal Public Ministry. For the prosecutor, the notice did not respect consultation with indigenous peoples from the Kaingang and Xokleng communities, who live in the areas.
